My research discusses what it is like to be embodied in a social world. How are norms governing the body’s appearance, such as beauty standards, shaped by gender and race? What does it feel like to be objectified? What bodily habits do we adopt when interacting with people of different social backgrounds than our own?
Many contemporary theories work with an eye toward combating gender and racial oppressions; it is in this sense that they are “critical.” My approach is not only critical but also phenomenological: it is premised on studying the lived experience of individuals oppressed based on their gender or race, and of members of privileged groups. Critical phenomenological projects, such as mine, promise theories that are continuous with everyday concerns about racism and sexism since they adopt our lived experiences as their starting point.
